A Novella of the FBI Psychics

Destin Mortin’s psychic gift comes with an ugly twist—she excels at tracking down violent rapists. But it’s rough on relationships. Once, her partner Caleb was her everything: filter, shield, rescuer, lover. The only man who didn’t think her a freak. Then he walked away.

Destin turned her back on the FBI to work for a private agency, but now a particularly horrendous case has come up, and her boss wants her paired with only the best.

For Caleb Durand, leaving Destin was an act of self-preservation. Every time she flung herself headlong into dangerous situations, every time he nursed her through soul-crushing visions, he’d died a little more inside.
Now they are forced to work together one last time. Tragedy has changed them both, but Caleb knows if he lowers his shields for an instant, he won’t have an icicle’s chance in hell of resisting the temptation to lose himself in her wild power.

But to catch the rapist, it’s exactly what he’ll have to do.

My review:

“The Unwanted” by Shiloh Walker is a novella in the ‘FBI Psychics’ series. Destin Mortin is a psychic whose abilities connect her with sexual predators and aid her in tracking them. Her failed relationship with Caleb Durand is painfully revisited when he is brought in from his latest FBI assignment to assist her. Caleb’s own abilities have garnered him a position away from the woman who both completed and tortured him and they both have gathered visible and non-visible scars as they struggle to survive without one another. They will have to resolve their issues if they plan to move on with their lives, let alone solve the case which has even more ties to them than they realized.

This mesmerizing tale provides a glimpse of intriguing characters who have remarkable powers that wreak their own cost upon those who are blessed (or cursed) with these amazing talents. This author always seems to provide starkly emotional tales that feature people who are somewhat damaged yet have found a way to continue to function, not always efficiently, but enough to survive. This is a great vignette that gives an insight into the lives of two driven people who are scarred and tied together by bonds that they are not sure they want to maintain. The mulitlayering that characterize Ms. Walker’s tales is apparent in this tale that showcases several complicated people and prompts a desire to read more of this series. I am hopeful that there will be many more stories in this fascinating series although I admit that I am torn because I am anxious to read more in another of this talented author’s series. If only she could clone herself and work on both at once!

  1. I do to a point. But I think there are a lot of people out there that claim to have the gift that don't.

    1. I agree that there are a lot of charlatans but I know that we don't use all of our brains so I think there is definitely a strong possibility that there are a few of us who can access powers that are not common.
