My review:

4.5 out of 5 stars

Rising Assets by Rebecca Zanetti is the intriguing contemporary romance tale that is part of the ‘Maverick Montana’ series and showcases a close friendship between Colton Freeze, Hawk, and Melanie (Mel) Jacobs.  Things have changed a lot since they were best friends as kids, not least of which is that Mel has grown up into an attractive woman and Colton is looking at her as more than the best bud he has always considered her to be.  They’ve all grown up and they all have their secrets that they may or may not be prepared to share plus they have to remember the trials and tribulations of living in a place small enough that they are featured in a town-wide betting pool.  Can they keep their friendship and support of each other or will everything change for the worse?

One of the best aspects of reading about life in a close-knit community is the wonderful interactions between all of the inhabitants.   Not only does one get glimpses of the other members of Colton’s family, which I presume are featured in other tales in this series, but there is that sense of caring and concern which permeates a small town.  There are some definitely sensual encounters described but I was most entertained by the liberal sprinkling of humorous and wry events that mark the evolution of the relationship between Colton, Mel and Hawk.  This is a heartwarming story that has a little intrigue and a lot of stubborn hardheadedness mixed with the poignancy of dealing with the emotional impact of physical disabilities and the difficulty of opening one’s heart up to potential pain.  A delicious tale that can be read as a stand alone but which will make one want to look for more in the series.
